5 Classy Ways To Save On An Engagement Ring

Engagement ring

What prospective groom hasn't secretly shuddered at the old saying an engagement ring should cost at least two months' salary?

Let's be honest: Even in robust financial times, this is an extravagant idea. But when the economy is fragile — and the price of gold and diamonds astronomical — spending up to 16 percent of your income on a ring can give new meaning to the words "crazy in love."

You don't have to break the bank to find a good engagement ring, says Robert Bates, senior editor of Jewelry Circular Keystone, a leading trade magazine in the jewelry industry. "People get hung up on the numbers," he says, "but it's really about finding (a ring) you like and making your fiance happy."

Start your marriage on the right financial footing by buying an engagement ring with love — and wisdom. Here are five ways to save money on the perfect ring.

Buy online

It may not be as romantic as entering a brick-and-mortar store to buy an engagement ring, but buying online can save you enough cash for many romantic nights. Thousands of couples seem to agree. According to The Wedding Report, more than $1 billion of the $9.64 billion spent on engagement and wedding rings in 2010 came from online purchases.

"The customer gets far more value for the money buying online," says jeweler L.G. Landau of DiamondIdeals.com. Because an online retailer has more competition than a traditional store and less overhead, prices are naturally lower, he says.

Consumers should be especially discerning when selecting an online jeweler. Landau recommends seeking retailers whose jewelry has been evaluated by gemologists, who can provide digital images of the stones and who have multiple channels of communication, from email to online chat capabilities.

Subtract a fraction of a carat

Although buying a 1-carat diamond is a benchmark for many couples, the truth is very few people can distinguish between a 1-carat stone and a 0.9- or 0.8-carat stone. That's good news for engaged couples since this minuscule difference in weight makes a major difference in price.

There's about a 30 percent price difference between a 0.9-carat and a 1-carat stone, says jewelry designer Sylvie Levine, co-owner of The Sylvie Collection, an engagement ring line. The same difference is found between 1.4 and 1.5 carats, and 1.9 and 2 carats. Couples on a budget should stay just under the half-carat mark, she says.

Be practical about clarity and color

Couples can also save money by choosing diamonds with a lower grade of color and clarity. This may strike some as skimping on quality, but be realistic. If you can't detect the difference with your naked eye, then paying a premium for a higher grade makes little sense.

Consider the main purpose of the stone, says diamond expert Ira Weissman of TruthAboutDiamonds.com, a website about savvy diamond buying. The point of an engagement ring diamond isn't to produce a return on investment, he says, but to look fantastic. "You don't need very high clarity to get (a diamond) that looks great." If the diamond has imperceptible imperfections, no one will know except you.

When it comes to color, Weissman recommends saving money by selecting the diamond with the lowest color grade that still appears white. Gemologists grade color by comparing each diamond to a master diamond, he says. While a diamond may receive a lower grade because it has more color than the master, standing alone, it may still appear sparkling white.

Skip the diamond

Brides who aren't wedded to tradition may be happy to forgo a diamond ring altogether. They'd be in good company. "Gemstones made a big comeback after Prince William proposed to Kate Middleton with Princess Diana's sapphire engagement ring," says Levine.

Ruth Batson, executive director of the American Gem Society, says sapphires and rubies make particularly good choices for engagement rings. "They are high on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, just under diamonds," she says. "Because an engagement ring is worn daily, you need a gemstone that is hard."

Brides favoring white stones have nondiamond options as well. For her engagement ring, photographer Sara Meynardie chose a white sapphire that "cost a fraction of the price of a diamond and looks just as stunning." And LeeAnn Shattuck, co-owner of Women's Automotive Solutions, opted for a synthetic diamond, choosing to invest the money saved in starting her business.

Consider a nontraditional setting or shape

A large center stone can ratchet up the cost of a ring. Levine suggests trimming costs by using a smaller center stone with a setting that increases its visual impact. A "halo" setting, for example, is one where the center stone is encircled with diamonds, adding sparks and flare. "Halos always make the center stone look bigger," says Levine.

Avoiding conventional shapes can also reduce costs. Traditional round brilliant diamonds usually cost more because they require high cutting skill, says American Gem Society's Batson. She recommends opting for a less-expensive shape, such as a square-shaped diamond. "(They) retain a lot of sparkle, which not only helps make a diamond look larger but more beautiful."

Being Rich Means You're More Likely To Put A Ring On It

Cold feet and money lies aren't the only things keeping Americans from walking down the aisle

New research from the Brookings Institution's Hamilton Project says that whether you're likely to tie the knot probably has more to do with the numbers on your paycheck than whether you're scared of becoming your parents. In other words, what we thought were societal issues are actually money issues.

In "The Marriage Gap: The Impact of Economic and Technological Change on Marriage Rates," authors Michael Greenstone and Adam Looney write that most middle-aged men in the 1970s were married regardless of income.

Today, marriage rates have declined "across the board," largely due to men's dwindling pay stubs.

This isn't news per se—we've covered how unemployment is wrecking Americans' love lives—but it is interesting to see just how rich you need to be in order to put a ring on it.

The Hamilton Project chart below illustrates how shifts in income have impacted men's proclivity for marriage over time—83% of men ages 30-50 in the top 10% of annual earnings are married today, whereas only 64% of median earners and half of those at the bottom 25th percentile of earnings are married, the authors found.

Compare that to the men in 1970, whose marriage rates were 95% (top earners), 91% (median earners) and 60% (bottom 25th percentile of earners), respectively.

Brookings Institute, marriage rates, men, income, Hamilton Project

Now let's look at the women. For those who made strides in past 40 years to pursue careers and attain an education, the top 10% of female earners were most likely to marry, while the bottom 70 percent of earners saw marriage rates decline over 15 percentage points.

The authors note that fewer women with careers view marriage as an economic necessity, which they believe might account for why the wealthy ones marry—more money, fewer issues—and why we believe makes the rest of them less likely to settle.

7 Ways To Pick The Perfect Engagement Ring Without Breaking The Bank

$

engagement-proposal-proposed-marriage-wedding-couples-engaged

For most guys, the thought of buying a pair of pants is daunting enough, let alone picking out the ring that could make or break their engagement.

"It's an uncomfortable purchase for guys," says Josh Holland, spokesperson for online jeweler BlueNile.com. "They go to a jewelry store and they're overwhelmed and confused."

It was BlueNile's founder's awkward experience shopping for a ring that inspired him to launch the company in the first place.

"(The company) is based on product education," Holland says. "No one here works on commission. We empower customers with information." In today's economy, that often means helping consumers track down a ring that not only suits their mate but their budget as well.

Here are seven smart ways to save on your engagement ring:

Forget the 3-month rule. The old adage that men should budget three month's salary for the perfect engagement ring is basically a load of bull. "That's a myth. There are no real rules. Men should make a budget and try to stick to it," Holland says.

Don't skimp on the cut. There are Four C's in diamond-shopping: cut, color, clarity and carat. "A diamond's cut is the most critical because it determines a diamond's brilliance (sparkle)," Holland says. "We really counsel people on not worrying about size so much as cut. If you have a really sparkly and brilliant ring it'll appear bigger than a bigger, lower-cut quality diamond.

Think outside the 'big box'. More than $1 billion of the $9.64 billion spent on engagement and wedding rings in 2010 came from online purchases. That's because online retailers like BlueNile offer prices anywhere from 20 to 40 percent lower than bricks-and-mortar shops. "A traditional retailer would buy ring for $1,000 and sell it for $2,000. We'll buy that and sell it for $1,300," Holland says.

Don't be afraid to go down a half-carat. You can save hundreds of dollars but knowing how the pricing system works for carat. "Diamond prices jump disproportionately at the carat and half-carat marks," according to Holland, so you'll want to buy just shy of those levels. "For example, instead of a 1 carat diamond, look for a .95. You'll save a significant amount of money, and the slight size difference will never be noticed."

Trust your eyes. Ask for an 'eye-clean' diamond, rather than 'flawless'. Most so-called "flaws" occur naturally in diamonds and can't be viewed by the human eye–no one will see what it is you're paying so much for. "To achieve the best value consider a near-colorless (graded G-H) instead of a colorless diamond (graded D-F) or a VS2 (Very Slightly Included) clarity grade as opposed to a Flawless clarity grade," he advises.

Check the return policy. So, the worst has happened and your fiancee girlfriend hates the ring–what if it's too late to return it? That's the case at many high-end jewelers, which either have 24-hour policies or none at all. The good news is many have loosened up a little on returns and offer 30-day policies, including BlueNile.

Buy Certified. "All diamonds are not created equal," Holland says. Don't pull out your credit card until you've seen certification by at least one independent grading agency–such as the Gemological Institute of America or the American Gem Society. "If your diamond has been graded by the jeweler behind the counter, it's a bit like the fox guarding the hen house," he says."

Brad Pitt Angelina Jolie

UPDATE: CNN just confirmed that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are engaged.

"Yes, it's confirmed. It is a promise for the future, and their kids are very happy. There's no date set at this time. Brad designed the ring," Pitt's representative told CNN.

--

Forget the red carpet, it appears Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie may finally walk down a different aisle.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jolie was spotted wearing a ring on her wedding finger April 11 at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art's Chinese Galleries.

Though neither engagement nor ring have been confirmed by Jolie's camp, a rep of Beverly Hills jeweler Robert Procop confirms the designer created a ring for the actress.

"I can confirm that, yes, Robert Procop did indeed design an engagement ring for Angelina Jolie, designed in collaboration with Brad Pitt," said the jeweler's rep.

Rumors of a wedding brewed after Pitt told CBS the couple was receiving pressure from the kids.

"It means something to them," he continued. "We will [get married] someday, we will. It's a great idea. 'Get mommy a ring.' 'OK, I will, I will.' "

This Determines How Much A Man Will Pay To Put A Ring On It

engagement ring, ring, jewelry

The more money a guy makes and the younger the bride, the more he spends on an engagement ring.

And, no, most guys don't spend three months of salary on it.

Via The Consuming Instinct: What Juicy Burgers, Ferraris, Pornography, and Gift Giving Reveal About Human Nature:

Lee Cronk and Bria Dunham investigated the amount that men spend on engagement rings as well as factors that might affect the amount spent. The average yearly income of the surveyed men was $41,858.20, with the amount spent on engagement rings $3,531.72. In other words, men spent 8.44 percent of their annual incomes on the rings, which is a far cry from the 25 percent norm. The total spent on rings was positively correlated to the annual incomes of both men and women but negatively correlated to women's ages.

Jennifer Aniston stepped out earlier this week finally revealing her huge engagement ring from fiancée Justin Thoreaux.

The couple got engaged August 10th during Thoreaux's birthday celebration in New York City.

The 43-year-old actress follows a long line of recently engaged stars from Miley Cyrus to Sofia Vergara.

However, none of the engagement rings of late amount to the most expensive in Hollywood.

Let's just say Beyoncé wears some serious bling and Jennifer Lopez doesn't sing "Don't be fooled by the rocks that I got" for nothing.

While Aniston's ring is estimated at a costly $500,000, hers isn't the priciest celebrity bling by a long shot.

Silvio Berlusconi Announces Engagement To A 27-Year-Old

$

Francesca PascaleSilvio Berlusconi sought to draw a line under his "bunga bunga" parties when he announced he was engaged to his girlfriend 50 years his junior, who makes him feel "less lonely."

In a wide-ranging interview aired on the talk show "Domenica Live" on his Canale 5 TV network, the 76-year-old billionaire said he was engaged to Francesca Pascale, his 27-year old girlfriend.

"Finally I feel less lonely,"Mr Berlusconi said. "I am engaged to a Neapolitan, it's official.

"She is 27 years old, with very solid values, beautiful on the outside and even more beautiful on the inside.

"She is very close to me, she loves me very much and I feel the same. My daughter Marina appreciates her and loves her very much too."

Mr Berlusconi does not appear to have let his second marriage get in the way of his engagement announcement.

He has five children from two marriages but is yet to reach agreement with Veronica Lario on the terms of their divorce. Recent media reports suggest no agreement has been reached on the settlement. His first wife was Carla Elvira Dall'Oglio, whom he was married to from 1965 to 1985. He married Ms Lario in 1990.

Mr Berlusconi plans to launch his fourth bid to be prime minister in elections expected to be held in February next year unless the current technocrat Prime Minister Mario Monti decides to run for office.

The tycoon also used Sunday's interview to lash out at the Milan trial where he is fighting charges that he paid for sex with an under-age prostitute, the then 17-year-old exotic dancer, Karima El-Mahroug, better known as "Ruby the Heart Stealer."

Mr Berlusconi and she have denied the charges.

Asked about the so-called "bunga bunga" parties, he said: "It was a time when I felt very lonely. I had just got divorced, my sister had died.

"Then someone said: 'Why don't we organise some soirées?' I was tricked."

Describing the Ruby trial as an "incredible machination," he added: "It was an excuse to put in place a giant operation for defamation against me and against the Italian government, including on an international level.

"Politicians get used to all kinds of slights after 20 years in politics. But there is one thing that cries out for vengeance before God and before man. I have been sentenced by a panel of judges in Milan!"

There have been rumours about his latest relationship for months and the couple was photographed together recently while watching Mr Berlusconi's football team, AC Milan.

The romance was confirmed by one of the media tycoon's most vocal supporters, Daniela Santanche, an MP in his People of Freedom (PDL) party, and one Italian newspaper recently described her as Italy's new "first lady."

A former shop assistant, Miss Pascale served as a provincial councillor in Mr Berlusconi's centre-Right PDL party until she stepped down in July.

She was one of the founding members of a Berlusconi support group called "Silvio, we miss you."

"Little by little she worked in my political organisation, then close to me," he said. "She is a great friend of Marina's." Marina, 46, is the oldest daughter of Mr Berlusconi.

Mr Berlusconi's fiancée has said that her life revolves around three things – her family, politics, and him – and is said to be jealous of other women in his inner circle, including Mara Carfagna, a glamour model whom he appointed equal opportunities minister in his last government.

We Live In A World Where Engagement Rings Have Worse Financing Options Than Credit Cards

$
0
0

engagement proposal wedding diamond ring

Are you willing to go into debt for love?

If you are ready to pop the question, but haven’t saved for the ring you want to buy, you may be tempted to finance the purchase.

But do that, and you may find that already pricey engagement ring costs a lot more than you planned.

The average engagement ring cost $5,200 and about 12% of couples spent more than $8,000 for an engagement ring, according to the XO Group Inc. 2011 Engagement Engagement & Jewelry Survey. The average ring was 1 carat for the center stone, and 1.4 carats total stones.

If you haven’t socked that much away, don’t worry. All of the major jewelry stores offer financing, with many of them promoting interest-free financing for six to 12 months. (No interest, no payments is no longer allowed thanks to the CARD Act). But there’s a catch: miss a payment or fail to pay off the balance and you’ll pay a lot more.

[Free Resource: Check your credit score and report card for free before applying for a credit card]

For example, here is what some of the major jewelry stores are currently advertising*. With all of these plans, if you make one late payment or fail to pay the balance in full during the promotional period, interest will be charged from the date of purchase — not from the date the promotional period ends.

Jared: 0% interest if paid in full within 12 months; up to 24.99%.

Kay Jewelers: 0% interest if paid in full within 12 months; up to 24.99%.

Shane and Company: 0% interest if paid in full in 6 months; 27.99%

Zales: 0% interest if paid in full in 6 months; 23.73% to 28.99%

While interest-free financing may work out fine if you are able to pay off the balance, it is risky if you aren’t able to come up with the cash to pay it off.One more potential trap: Applying for one of the accounts will create an inquiry on your credit reports.

Plus, if you accept the financing, you’ll have a new account with a balance listed on your credit reports, and that could potentially have a negative effect on your credit scores. That’s something to keep in mind if you hope to buy a home together soon, for example.[Related Article: How to Keep Your Wedding on BudgetAvoiding Engagement Ring DebtIf you don’t want to wait much longer, you may want to consider more affordable options:

  • Buy a less expensive ring and start saving for an upgrade on, say, your fifth or tenth wedding anniversary.
  • Use interest-free financing for the initial purchase, then use a low-rate balance transfer to pay off the balance before the 0% store financing ends. I am not recommending this, since you can run into traps here too, but if you pull it off, it’s better than paying 25% or more for long-term store financing.
  • Get a part-time job in a jewelry store and save substantially on your purchase. Put all of your earnings toward a ring.

And when you do choose a ring, shop carefully to make sure you are getting the best deal. Jennie Ma, TheKnot.com fashion editor, offers these tips:

  • Buy Shy and Save: Shop for diamonds that weigh just under certain weight thresholds. For example, if you want a 1.0 carat diamond, you can buy a .90 carat diamond and save more than $1,000. And buying shy will hardly affect the diamond’s outward appearance (the diameter of a 1.0 carat diamond is 6.5 mm, whereas the diameter of a .90 shy carat stone is 6.3 mm — the difference is the thickness of a piece of paper). The price difference between a 1.90 carat diamond and a 2.0 carat diamond can be as much as $5,000!
  • Hit the Internet: There can be some great deals found on the Internet — i.e. BlueNile and Union Diamond allow you to compare the going rate of loose diamonds and ring settings based on their grades and styles.

  • Buy Loose Diamonds: Don’t be dazzled by the pretty setting, the fancy box or the clever advertisements. Most jewelry ads are selling you on settings, not diamonds, even though the stone is a whopping 90 percent of a ring’s cost. It’s important to buy the stone loose, not mounted, so you can inspect the entire stone.

  • Don’t be Afraid to Negotiate: There’s always room for negotiation, so don’t be afraid to go after a deal. Never settle on the sticker price unless you’ve shopped around and you know it’s already a fair price.

Keep one more thing in mind before going into debt for an engagement ring: You’ve got a much bigger expense coming up soon — a wedding.[Credit Cards: Research and compare credit cards at Credit.com]*This information may have changed from the date of publication. 7 Ways To Save On The Perfect Engagement Ring

brit dave morin engagedFor most guys, the thought of buying a pair of pants is daunting enough, let alone picking out the ring that could make or break their engagement.
